Virus Protection
Virus protection has become a critical issue in maintaing a healthy computer. Some ISP's (Internet Service Providers) like Earthlink, offer free virus and spyware protection, you should see if yours does.
Not only can a virus enter your computer through email but the bad guys are getting trickier by including them in hidden downloads called spyware. Yes, files are
being downloaded to your computer and you don't know it. Mostly it's a little program to track where you go when online and report back to somebody selling something.
My advice is to invest in some virus software that includes spamware. Set it up to automatically work checking your computer and updating itself witht the
latest security patches. For $20 a year or so you can save yourself a huge headache and major down time. The software is so easy to use these days.
Yes, I've experienced this myself. I caught a bug that took me a whole week to kill. I had to load a free trial version of AOL on my kids computer to get hooked to the internet to research how to get rid of this varmet. It was so smart it shut down my computer when I tried to access files that might get rid of it! I'm forever grateful to those computer nurds who give graciously their time and experience to discussion groups that help poor saps like me. There is such a group at Dell.com.
Even though I went through such a bad experience I still don't use extreme security measures to block anyone and everyone from accessing my computer. I still want Amazon to use cookies to know who I am, and lots of other accounts.

The best advice? KEEP A BACKUP OF YOUR CRITICAL DATA, away from your computer, on a CD, tape or whatever means you have. Most new browsers allow you to save your preferences to a file, back it up! Most email programs now allow you to save your address book to a file, back it up! Keep all you data files in one directory (with subdirectories of course), to make it easy to backup.
