Spirit Play
The Spirit Play model of Religious Exploration lets us expose children ages three through six years to a variety of spiritual stories in a lovingly prepared environment. Each story box has a book or story summary and small props for the children to manipulate as they re-tell the story to themselves or their friends.
In keeping with this year's theme of Historic Unitarian Universalism, the children have become familiar with some biblical parables. Christianity plays a huge role in defining Unitarian Universalism and our principles, and we'd like the children to have a concrete understanding of the stories that will lead them to more abstract analysis of the same stories in later years.
Because we want our program to be flexible and child-friendly, we also choose stories and activities in which the children have shown a definite interest. We take the time to observe the children at work and to support them in learning how to interact with each other in a loving manner.
Since young children thrive on consistency, we have two teachers (Esther and Lizzie) who share the role of leading the class on alternating months. This way the children get to know us and we get to know the children.
We also have “Floaters” – adult volunteers who move between all three RE rooms to lend a helping hand wherever needed and to make sure the children are safe and supported by our community.
