Calling All UUCC Newcomers
Regular Visitors, New / Nearly New Members
After Sunday Service on March 23, Rev. Andy
Burnette and Jeff Haverly will be offering the
quarterly Exploring Unitarian Universalism
(UU) Session. During the course, participants
will take a trip back to 16th Century
Transylvanian and explore the origins and
writings of Unitarians while also exploring
Universalism in America throughout the 20th
Century. We'll then bring you up to date
through the joining of the two in the early 60s
and discuss the evolution of our principles and
what is most important to UUs today. We will
particularly explore the birth and evolution of
UUCC. We will also discuss what it means to
be a member of UUCC Danville. Each
participant will receive a Unitarian Universalist
Pocket Guide and a number of brochures
detailing various perspectives of what UUs
believe.
The session will be held in the Overflow Room.
Please sign up on the sign up list in that room
so we can be sure we have enough materials, <
or contact Jeff Haverly at jshave229@comcast.net or Rev. Andy
Burnett at uuccrev@comcast.net . See you there.
Book Discussion
"His Dark Materials" Discussion Dan Schnake will lead a discussion of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy of books, also known as "The Golden Compass" series (after the title of the first book). The discussion will focus on theological issues raised in the books.
This series has engendered some controversy for its depiction of God and the Church. Some view the books as an attack upon Christianity or Religion itself -- others hold that they attack only religious dogmatism. Pullman ambitiously takes on topics like Original Sin, the nature of mankind, Angels, Demons, and the War in Heaven. The title itself of "His Dark Materials" is a direct reference to John Milton's "Paradise Lost."
Anyone who has read the series and would enjoy an open-minded discussion is welcome. Drinks and snacks will be served.
Dan will be leading this discussion on Wed. March 12 from 6:00-7:45 pm at the Avon Library downstairs in Room B. This discussion is open to the general public and is limited to 16 participants. If you plan on coming please register at the Avon library website. Go to http://www.avon.lib.in.us/ and click on adult programs and forward to the March calendar. Youth are welcome and encouraged to attend.
